IT and why it’s important
22 May 2017
Last week, a used car dealer in Greater Manchester was fined £40,000 for sending 336,000 spam text messages. Concept Car Credit in Radcliffe was investigated by the Information Commissioners Office, which ruled that the business had violated laws governing the use of consumers personal details.
Its probably reasonable to assume that most reputable franchised dealers arent in the business of marketing in this fashion, but this sort of ruling may well be a sign of things to come when General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) legislation comes into force in May 2018, and things tighten up.
The worldwide WannaCry cyber attack that took place little over a week ago is further testament to the need for retailers to keep on top of things from an IT perspective. As yet, were not aware of any specific impacts on dealerships (although if your business was affected by the hack, please get in touch and tell us what happened and how you handled it), but it did briefly shut down Renault and Nissan factories.
These sorts of issues are exactly why Auto Retail Network is running its GDPR webinar on Thursday; its at 2pm, expected to last around half an hour and you can sign up here.
Forgive me if that sounds like an obvious plug, but the webinar is also free.
