Renault cuts new car warranty

  04 February 2018

Renault has reduced its new car warranty from an above-average four years/100,000 miles to the industry-standard three years/60,000 miles, effective from 1 February.

A spokesman for the manufacturer said the decision was driven by the majority of customers changing their cars at less than three years.

“A lot of our customers, although they’re taking a four-year term, they’re renewing at three years, so we were offering them something that’s not as much benefit as it could be. I’ve been told that we’re looking at a 32-month changeover [on average].”

He added that it was “very rare” for a customer to return a car with more than 60,000 miles on the clock.

Though the change applies to the majority of Renault’s new cars, the Koleos SUV and the electric Zoe supermini retain 100,000-mile policies, but are reduced to three years, while the LCV range has also changed to a three-year/100,000-mile policy.

The spokesman said this was due to a high percentage of fleet sales with the Koleos, which is therefore likely to cover more miles, the Zoe’s newer powertrain technology and that vans are “almost always working vehicles” and again, more likely to accrue large mileages.

Other national sales companies have described above-average warranties as useful for retaining second owners who may have bought a vehicle outside of the franchised network.
