SMMT dinner reflects mood of the year

  03 December 2012

This year’s SMMT annual dinner was a grand affair with an whopping 1100 industry luminaries in attendance. And me. Joking aside, as an industry we’ve found ourselves at the end of the year and business is going okay.

Overall, the market’s up 5% and retail sales are strong thanks to competitive finance offers. And the registration figures due out on Thursday are expected to be as strong as ever. The retailers I speak to will quietly admit that while it’s hard work selling cars, they are still selling them. This comes despite overwhelming messages from elsewhere across Europe that the economy is still doomed.

The only fear some retailers are expressing in the UK is that by doing better than expected, next year’s targets will be even tougher. Let’s hope next year continues to perform as well at 2012, and let’s hope some of those tables at the dinner weren’t pre-registered.
