Networks Report 2023

With the new car retail model experiencing its biggest shake up in years as many brands switch to the agency model, Auto Retail Network has reflected this change with a new name for what was the Franchising Report.

Now titled the Networks Report, this publication still remains the only complete guide to the structure and sales performance of automotive brand networks in the UK.

NEW FOR THIS YEAR: On top of the name change, the 2023 report, sponsored by MSXi and Urban Science, sees the addition of several new topics and increased coverage for some existing sections.

With the increasing number of manufacturers making the move from franchised to agency agreements we’ve expanded our coverage of each brand’s plans so far. This provides an easy reference guide to who’s doing what in agency and direct sales both in the UK and abroad.

As we exit the high-demand, low-supply times triggered by the pandemic and as we approach the agency model, this year’s report includes analysis of return-on-sales figures over time for each brand. We also examine how far and how fast multi-branding is developing by looking at the number of network points and the number of geographic showroom locations. The third new area of analysis is into the growing number of new brands coming to the UK and how these players will approach the market and if they offer product that existing brands don’t.

On top of the historic core points and the new additions, the Auto Retail Network Index, which aggregates a host of metrics covering both the cost to run a franchise, its profitability, investment levels and how easy it is to do business with the NSC, has been updated for the 2023 report taking into account the Covid-19 pandemic’s impact on auto retail and the supply constraints the whole sector has suffered from.

Networks Report 2023 data has been sourced directly from carmakers, other definitive industry sources and personally checked by Auto Retail Network researchers.
